BLC Says:
Blue Point Brewing Company Oatmeal Stout, though not their flagship, is definitely what we would consider a staple from this Long Island Brewery. It is a year round release that can always be found on tap in their tasting room as well as in 22 oz. bottles that can (hopefully) be found at your favorite distributor. We have had the pleasure of enjoying this beer on draught, cask and from the bottle, though this review is of Blue Point Oatmeal Stout fresh off the tap. However, this is a beer that lends itself well to all three styles without a huge flavor difference between them, so any of the three serving options would be a good choice. Also, if you stop by the brewery, a fan favorite is the “black and blue” which is half oatmeal stout half blueberry ale. Together, they make a fruity, rich and easy to drink pair.

Blue Point Oatmeal Stout is a dark brown, almost opaque beer with a creamy, sand colored head that remains perched atop the liquid for a respectable amount of time, leaving generous lacing as it falls. The scent is earthy, roasted and features a hint of bitter coffee. On the contrary, there are also subtle sweet molasses notes with a slight presence of dark fruit. The sip is medium bodied and creamy, with mild carbonation that moves everything along nicely. The flavor begins with a punch of roasted black coffee and oats which subside into a sweet, mellow finish. In keeping with Blue Point’s theme of this beer being a “meal in a glass” we would compare this stout to a breakfast that begins with black coffee, followed by a hearty bowl of oatmeal topped with dates, raisins and a swirl of brown sugar. That being said, you probably want to wait until after work (or at least lunch) to enjoy a Blue Point Oatmeal Stout.

What Alicia Thinks:
This is by far one of my favorite beers that Blue Point makes (don’t feel left out Sour Cherry Imperial Stout, I still love you too). It is rich and flavorful, but not to the point where you can’t enjoy an entire pint while sitting outside the brewery on a nice day. As far as stouts go, I feel like this is a very balanced option as it never gets too sweet, bitter or hoppy. Though I have had it many times, this is still always one of the “samples” I get when visiting Blue Point Brewery, but I think it has graduated from sample level to regular a long time ago.

What Kevin Thinks:
This is one of the beers that really expanded my thoughts on what a beer could be. Like most people I started with BMC products in the beginning. From there I had the chance to try a few other Macro “crafty” brews and it started me on a path seeking out more flavorful and interesting beer. Living on Long Island years ago we did not have as many options as we do today (soon over 20 breweries will be operating on LI). Blue Point became the place to go and try new styles of beer with new people in a fun, easy going atmosphere. While like many in the craft beer world I was initially drawn in by their flagship beer it was their other brews with hops (the siren of the craft beer world) that brought me down to the brewery. Their Toasted Lager and Hoptical Illusion got me in the door but it was not until after I tried some of the other beers at Blue Point like their ESB and especially this Oatmeal Stout that craft beer had me. Easy drinking, full of flavor and balanced this is a wonderful beer from Blue Point. I would recommend this to any stout fan and also to those looking to dip their toes in the inky stout waters. For me this is an 8/10.

The Brewery Says:
Oats aren’t just for breakfast you know? Commonly referred to as a “meal in a glass,” our Oatmeal Stout is definitely the one meal of the day you should not miss. A rich, deeply malted extravaganza of a beer, Blue Point Brewing’s Oatmeal Stout is a dark beer drinker’s dream come true. We use pale, crystal, chocolate, and roasted malts with just the right amount of flaked oats added to produce an uncommonly silky brew. This full-flavored and rich tasting legendary dark beer is a romantically delicious microbrew to share with someone special, at anytime of the day or evening.
